Kelly here! I’ve got a few things on my mind this month, from being sick, to facing fear and remembering to CARE about the consumers we try to get in front of every day. I love learning, and sharing resources, so my hope is that some of these will come in handy for other small businesses and leaders trying to make a difference.

healthiestyou-telehealth-mobile-appI got sick last week. I like to think I’m invincible, but there’s nothing like the symptoms of an infection to bring me back to reality. Like most business owners and leaders, I don’t have time to be sick, so when I am, it causes more stress and anxiety than usual. This time, I acted early by using one of the employee benefits MOR Strategy Partners helped me put in place for myself and my staff this year. Healthiest You is a mobile app that allowed me to have a tele-health visit with a physician at 1:30 a.m. in my pajamas, in my own home. By morning, a prescription for antibiotics was waiting for me at the pharmacy down the street. No scheduling an office visit, no traveling to an office visit, no paying for an office visit out of pocket. If we want to get the cost of healthcare under control in this country, I see this as a great place to start. And for someone in my shoes, who can’t afford to be out of commission, it sure helped to get me the support I needed fast, and without hassle.

The Thank You Economy

The-Thank-You-Economy-Gary-VaynerchukI picked up a copy of Gary Vaynerchuk’s 2011 book, The Thank You Economy at a thrift shop for $1.00. I can see where someone might think it’s outdated, as he frequently cites social media platforms that were relevant six years ago, and we all know how much has changed in that time. But what hasn’t changed is the fact that in order to effectively use social media for business, our companies have to care more about our customers. This book reinforces the idea that engagement is key, and if we actually give a shit about what people have to say about our brands, good or bad, we’ll be more likely to succeed in this ever-changing online landscape. One piece that really stuck with me: if you’re not passionate enough about your business to want to engage with people about it online 24/7, and to have tons of great conversations, then you’re in the wrong business. A great book, and still relevant.

Tim-Ferriss-Fear{less}We all know that I can’t get enough of Tim Ferriss. From The Four Hour Workweek to his Tim Ferriss Show podcast – I get inspired by it. Tim always pays attention to high performers, and recently, launched a TV series called fear{less}, which focuses on how these world-class performers overcome fear. He shared a piece of his conversation with Poker sensation Phil Hellmuth on the podcast, and man, did I enjoy it. Check out “Setting Goals, Making Money, and Overcoming Tough Times” for some crazy stories (one of them takes place in the dead of winter at a bar in Madison, WI) and great advice on how to stay on top (insider tip: be better at managing your finances than you are at poker).
