I am a believer in a purpose-filled life – I think people, books, and resources find me at exactly the right time to teach me what I need most. Two interesting interpretations of the same concept crossed my path today, which made me think it might be important – and might be worth sharing with other Milwaukee business owners out there!
First – I picked up an audio book at the library called 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works–A True Story. Author and Nightline Anchor Dan Harris opens the book with the story of his stress-filled, competitive life-of-a-journalist leading up to multiple on-air panic attacks. “After learning about research that suggests meditation can do everything from lower your blood pressure to essentially rewire your brain, Harris took a deep dive into the underreported world of CEO’s, scientists, and even marines who are now using it for increased calm, focus, and happiness.” I’m only a couple of chapters in, but let’s be honest – any tool with the potential for a 10% increase in happiness (or decrease in stress) is something I’m willing to explore.
Second – the focus word in my yoga class was “Self-Regulation.” Now this is not my usual mantra – I’m all over words like, “peace,” and “clarity,” and “light.” Self-regulation sounds, well, a bit rigid for what I’m seeking when I practice yoga. However, as the class progressed, I started to connect with the idea.
First, our teacher asked us to take note of our current breath – mine was a bit shallow – and then purposefully elongate our breaths, inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth.
Second, she asked us to regulate our bodies – tuning in and being mindful of what we were experiencing physically, making sure that we were not pushing beyond our own place of comfort to pain.
And finally, we were offered the following guidance on how we might regulate our minds: “Meditation offers so many rewards…with the hectic pace and demands of modern life, many of us feel stressed and over-worked…our stress and tiredness make us unhappy, impatient, and frustrated. It can even affect our health…meditation actually gives you more time by making your mind calmer and more focused. A simple 5-minute breathing meditation can help you to overcome stress and find some inner peace.” -Soleil Lune Yoga Center, LLC
Could meditation really be the next big thing amongst business owners? It’s certainly grabbing my attention, and I’m not the only one. Business Insider reports that the likes of Russell Simmons, Oprah, and Marc Benioff are meditating daily (“14 Executives Who Swear By Meditation“) and Forbes offers the ideas that mindfulness meditation can turn office politics from a jungle into a garden, and that it can build an environment for Aha! Moments (“Why The World’s Best Leaders Want to Meditate On It“). Even the Harvard Business Review is talking about it (“How Meditation Benefits CEOs“).
All of this talk is making me wonder if meditation could be just as important in my daily routine as moving my body, a healthy diet, and sufficient sleep. Stay tuned, as I try some different techniques (Dan Harris actually has a guided program based on 10% Happier) to see what sticks – and what benefits I see when it comes to serving our clients and growing our business!
